Our Commitment to Sustainable Tourism: Addressing Overtourism at Marukoma Onsen Ryokan

[Protected Natural Areas]
Sustainable tourism in protected natural areas refers to designated regions where tourism activities are conducted while preserving the natural environment and ecosystems. These areas are intended to minimize the negative impact of tourism on nature, safeguard local culture and biodiversity, and contribute to the vitality of the regional economy.

At Marukoma Onsen Ryokan, we are engaged in the following initiatives related to Protected Natural Areas:

  1. Environmental Protection
As the head of the Shikotsu Lake Fisheries Cooperative Association, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan enforces regulations under the Natural Parks Act, such as the general prohibition of motorized boats on Lake Shikotsu, in order to preserve the lake’s natural environment.
  2. Sustainable Tourism Practices
We encourage both tourism operators and travelers to follow the principles of ecotourism. This includes promoting the use of low-carbon transportation methods, meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients, and the adoption of reusable materials.
  3. Contribution to the Local Community
We ensure that the revenue generated from tourism contributes to the local economy, supporting improvements in residents’ quality of life and the preservation of traditional culture. Our staff actively engage in community development by organizing and participating in initiatives related to crime prevention, fire safety, disaster preparedness, education, the establishment of a local clinic, and various activities to protect the environment of Lake Shikotsu.

Through such initiatives in protected natural areas, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan promotes sustainable tourism, helping to preserve the value of the destination while protecting both nature and the local community.

Sapporo’s Secret Onsen Sanctuary Marukoma Onsen Ryokan

Founded in 1915, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan is a historic hot spring inn nestled on the serene shores of Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaido. Known for its open-air panoramic bath with breathtaking lake views, the ryokan also boasts a rare natural hot spring that flows directly from the lakebed – a truly unique experience found only in a few places in Japan.
The mineral-rich waters, naturally cloudy and soothing, reflect the deep connection between the land and its history. Guests can savor seasonal Japanese cuisine crafted with local ingredients, served either in a traditional kaiseki style or grilled over an open irori hearth – a nod to the timeless culinary traditions of the region.
With nature, healing waters, and authentic flavors, Marukoma offers a soul-soothing escape from the stress of modern life.
